Starting today, January 7, our Saturday noon Occupy protests will be at the Federal Building at 9th Street between St. Joe and Main.
Starting Monday, January 9, we’re back on our regular schedule of General Assembly meetings in Room B of the RC Public Library starting at 5:30 pm. At these meetings we decide where to put our focus and what our next actions will be.
You’ve all heard by now that the Occupiers who showed up at the RC Council Meeting on Tuesday convinced the Council (vote 10-0) to set up a task force to create a protocol for selecting the financial institutions used by the city for deposits of tax money and other receipts. Occupiers favor local banks and credit unions and oppose doing business with Wells Fargo and Bank of America, two of the big banks whose corrupt practices have done untold harm to the 99%. Anyone interested in being on the Banking/Depository Review Task Force should fill out the Citizen Interest Form on the city website. See link below. If you know someone who might be interested, pass the word. For more info call Mayor Sam Kooiker at 394-4110 or email him at Sam Kooiker firstname.lastname@example.org. Deadline to apply is January 12.
There will be a special protest Friday, January 20. We will gather at the Federal Building at 4:30 pm to catch drive time traffic as we join a nationwide protest against the US Supreme Court Citizens United decision that allows unlimited amounts of corporate money to corrupt the election process.
The next ORC teach-in will be January 31 at 5:30 pm at the RC Public Library Room B. Lilias Jarding will present on corporate energy–coal, oil, nuclear–with emphasis on uranium mining in and around the Black Hills. Karen Hall will talk about how to lobby the SD Legislature effectively and the online tools available.
